Some Backgammon Terms

Advanced Anchor:If one builds an anchor on the point-4 or point-5 in his away board or an anchor in the player’s home board to stop movement of the opponent’s checkers, it is called an advanced anchor. Jacoby and Crawford have analyzed the advantage of building anchors and holding it for longer duration in their book, The backgammon Book.

Ace Point Game:If the payer places a checker at the opposition’s ace-point and waits for hitting in a situation when the opponent has started bearing off, it is called an ace-point game, as the first player’s checker is literally caught in the opposition’s ace point.

Beaver:If a player finds his position to be favorable after accepting the double, he may issue an immediate redouble to keep the possession of the doubling cube. This is called beaver.

Builder:When a checker is placed for hitting the opponent to make a point, that checker is called a builder.

Break a Point:When one a checker is moved from a blockade for hitting the opponent, it is said to be break a point. Breaking a point leaves the other checker vulnerable.

Close Out:If a player sets up blockades in all 6 points adjacent to bar, while the opponent’s checker (s) is on the bar is said a Close out game as the opponent can not bring his checker back in game until and unless at least one blockade is removed.

Crossover:When the player moves his checker from one quadrant to the other, it is called a crossover.

Deep Points:The low numbered points like 1-point, 2-point, 3-point in the home board of the player is called Deep Points. According to Paul Magriel, occupation of deep points at the early stage of a game does not become effective

Diversify:In aggressive backgammon, when a player places his checkers in order to increase the number of good rolls (optimistic), it is called diversify.

Drop Point:The ideal condition as shown in the equity table for dropping a double, is called the drop point.

Golden Point:The player’s 20-point, which is the 5-point of the opposition is called the Golden Point

Indirect Shot:When one player places his checker in a position at a distance of 6 points e from the opponent’s checker it is called Indirect Shot. The objective is to hit the checker in the subsequent rolls.

Joker:A roll, which swings the game in one’s favor is called a joker.

MWC:Probability of winning the match is based on the current match score and the running game is called Match Winning Chances or MWC is short.

Pip Count:The total number of points required for a complete bear off from the current game position is called Pip Count.

Spare Checker:The additional checker, which can be used for hitting or making a point without breaking a blockade or a prime is called a spare checker.
