The best way to create the primary movement is to block your opponent?s roadway by occupying point-23 to r-18 at your earliest opportunity. If you can block these rows even before your rivals could move his checkers from point-24, it gives you a tremendous advantage.

A quick analysis of this movement will show that the player with the throw of the dice that gets to any of the six numbers then that player has blocked all 6 points, literally blocking the opponent from any movement. Now you should start thinking of moving your checkers and focus at point-18, which means move the checker from the point-18 first. This stops your opponent moving any piece with a throw other than a six. Should he achieve the rare possibility of a double 6 he will not only escape but create problems for you too.

However, even one 6 will force the opponent to move one checker, leaving the other vulnerable, which can be hit. So that you can take the ultimate advantage of hitting the opponent at point-24 and building another block slowly.

Once you have blocked the entire home board, the opponent has to wait patiently for the first player to start bearing off. Just imagine the tactical advantage, you gain here. As one player sits idly by sacrificing all his plans and strategies leaving him at your mercy as you plough into his pieces. But you still need to be alert whilst bearing off so as not to leave any blots. If the first player leaves a blot and the opponent hits, the opponent gains the psychological advantage to get the opportunity to fight back. At this point the entire game can swing the other way in a moment!

So what happens if the opponent builds up blockade before you? The answer is very simple; you try to build up an advanced blockade. A proper blockade can turn the board even to a closed board, where the opponent can hardly bring his checkers back to the game from the bar. Now the most pertinent question is for how long? This entirely depends upon the player and his reading of the game. Once the player is satisfied with the placement and his planning, we advise him to start leaving the blockades carefully and solely focus on bearing off, because that is the ultimate deciding factor.

Please note the game ends and one is declared a winner only when one has completed bearing off all his checkers. Never assume anything until that last checker is off the board.
