Checkers are generally moved by drag & drop method in online backgammon. One can also move simply by clicking the mouse. The click of the mouse assigns a higher or lower value? If you click on the left hand side mouse button, you opt for a higher dice and roll first if on the other hand you right click on the checker, the checker is supposed to accept the lower dice value. Whenever the first checker is moved, the 2nd checker goes to the remaining roll by default.
How to record a game?
Generally most of the online game sites have got a button called history. You may save by going through the submenu of history and the game will be saved on your hard disk after confirming the path/ folder name from you. Its good practice to save the game for future reference and mostly for analytical purposes. Once the game is saved, you can open it in the future, which will show the list of moves for both of you and your opponent.
What about the Players rating system?
The rating system has been introduced to determine the skill level of each player in the circuit so whenever any player logs on he can choose the players by looking up their rating. Every win and loss affects your rating, which is dynamically changed with the conclusion of each game that a player plays. One can refer to FIBS for better appreciation on rating procedures.
When can one double?
Online backgammon follows the standard rules of backgammon. The doubling cube should be available and it is set in the middle. Generally it is shown by a pop-up. One can double if and only if the possession of the cube goes to him. In online games, one needs to disable the auto roll function for issuing a double. The most important factor being you can double if the Crawford rule is NOT applied in the game.
What is the Crawford Rule?
The Crawford rule is named after John R. Crawford. When either of the players is just one point short of victory, then the opponent cannot announce a double in the subsequent game. The particular game where issuing a double is prohibited is called the Crawford game. Scientifically, even if a double is announced and accepted by the player approaching victory it will be nullified because of point 1 or 2 and can hardly create a difference for him.
Rather, the double may benefit the opponent who is losing. Should the Crawford game remain indecisive in terms of a final win or loss, then all the rules of double and redouble will be back in place for the subsequent games. This rule has been accepted worldwide. Even the United States Backgammon Tournament Rules & Procedures follow Crawford rule at the closing stage of any tournament.
What happens if a game gets disconnected in the middle?
Generally the player gets 5 minutes to reconnect and maximum permissible disconnection in a game is 3. Beyond these limits and you are disqualified.
