Backgammon Terminology Insight

You must be aware of certain terms used in backgammon from the beginning of your backgammon career. In this article we have not defined a list of all the jargons as there are many, however we have tried to select ones that are of strategic importance for playing the game efficiently and effectively.

Ace point: The last point where you can move to. It is essentially the 1st point from your home board.

Anchor: If you create a blockade at the opponent’s home board which essentially means your away board, it is called an anchor.

Bar and Bar-point: The thick ridge partition dividing the board vertically is called the Bar. The point 7 is called the Bar point.

Bear in and Bear Off: Bringing checkers from your away board to your home board is called ‘Bear In’ and moving checkers off the board at the end of the game is called ‘Bear Off’.

Blot, Hit & Exposed Checker: A single checker placed on a point is vulnerable to being hit. This is called a blot and the checker is called an exposed checker. If the opponent’s checker lands on such Blot, then the first one is Bumped and placed on the Bar.

Closed Board: If a player can make all 6 points in his home board then the board is considered closed.

Doubles: If both the dice show the same number, you get the advantage of automatic double. This means, you can play four times the number shown by the dice.

Doubling Cube: A cube with the numbers 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64. In the beginning 64 is shown at the top. When a player offers a double he turns the cube to 2 and then continues 4, 8 and so on with the doubles. Whoever has offered the last double he holds the possession of the cube. Double has got a double impact on the score of the match and increases with the number of double, redoubles etc. Declining a double means losing.

Enter/ Come in: Bringing one’s checker into the opponent’s inner board from the bar

Gammon and Backgammon: If one player bears off all his checkers before the opponent bears off any, it is called a Gammon. If such a Gammon Situation is further amplified by a situation when the opponent has checkers still in the inner board of the winner, it is called Backgammon. In Gammon the winner gets double the value and backgammon yields the winner triple.

Golden Point: Your point 20, which essentially is the opponent’s point 5
Mid point The point 13 of your home board, where five checkers are placed in the beginning, is called the mid-point.

Own/ Control / Make a point: If you place two of your checkers on a single point, you own that point as it prevents your opponent from landing his checkers on there. Prime Blockades in 6 successive rows which forbids the opponent’s checkers to move from behind.

Shot: Chance of hitting a blot
